- Abstract
The article discusses rapid growth and several significant changes in the trade and industrial structure of the Pacific Asian Nations. It suggests that these changes have created powerful economic forces that may lead to closer economic cooperation and integration in the region. It describes a pattern of development based on the product-cycle hypothesis that is claimed to be taking place in Pacific Asia. It also examines the economic impact of China's open-door policy and its potential role in the future development of Pacific Asian economies. It focuses on the growth and performance and current-account developments in the newly industrializing economies of East Asia. It also discusses Japan's efforts at restructuring its economy and its role in integrating the Pacific Asian economies.
