- Abstract
A case study is presented on the mechanization of the marquetry process in the U.S. and British furniture industries in the 19th century. The author discusses the machine methods used to produce this decorative woodworking technique, analyzes how the social shaping of technology (SST) has impacted the direction and rate of inventions, and explores social, economic, and cultural aspects of design and technology.
