- Abstract
A biography of 19th century attorney Lambdin Purdy Milligan is presented. He was born on March 24, 1812, in Belmont County, Ohio. He studied law and was admitted to the Ohio bar and married Sarah Ridgeway on October 27, 1835. He believed in the political doctrine of states' rights. He moved his family to Indiana in 1845 and worked in Democratic Party politics and edited the Democratic newspaper "Democratic Age." He was accused of attempting to steal Union weapons during the U.S. Civil War and the case was heard in the U.S. Supreme Court in Ex parte Milligan. He died on December 21, 1899.
