- Abstract
The article discusses the style of Chinese opera and how the artistic space in which it is performed translates to film, particularly translating stage sets to film. The importance of setting in motion pictures is considered as is the need for a proper setting that is more complex than the kinds of sets used in opera performances because this will not provide the experiences that film viewers are looking to experience. The author believes that the settings of opera films should be different than conventional films and that the setting must unify the realism and expressionism of the opera. A scene in the Soviet Russian ballet film "Romeo and Juliet" is analyzed. Other topics include the ornateness of opera singers' costumes, set design, and mise-en-scène.
