- Abstract
With swelling global populations and climate change stressing agricultural systems, achieving sustainable food production and security presents daunting challenges. Nanotechnology offers promising solutions through innovations spanning the entire food value chain. Among emerging nanomaterials, chiral nanomaterials uniquely exhibit asymmetric structural configurations and chiroptical activities. Beyond established applications in enantioselective catalysis and sensing, chiral nanomaterials are garnering interest as antimicrobial and pesticidal agents to enhance food safety and agricultural productivity. This review highlights recent advances in tailoring chirality of nanomaterials to develop effective strategies for antibacterial and nanopesticide applications. We summarize key works demonstrating antimicrobial mechanisms of chiral inorganic nanomaterials against common foodborne pathogens. Additionally, we discuss pioneering studies utilizing chiral nanopesticides to suppress plant viral infections and fungal diseases. Lastly, the key issues to be challenged and perspectives for the future development of chiral nanomaterials in the field of sustainable agriculture are highlighted.
