- Abstract
This article highlights the increasing importance of small and mid-sized cities (SMCs) in Canada. These cities are experiencing significant growth and are recognized as centers of innovation and collaboration. However, SMCs face challenges due to global forces that prioritize resources for larger cities. The article emphasizes the need to understand the role of SMCs in building communities and economies. The special section of the article examines various challenges facing Canadian SMCs, including issues of sustainability, revitalization, democracy, school closures, housing justice, and food systems. The contributions in the section provide empirical research on the unique characteristics and issues of SMCs, offering insights into their development and potential solutions to their challenges.
