- Abstract
High-producing dairy cows suffer from negative energy balance in early lactation. An increase in the milk fat to protein ratio in early lactation indicates severe mobilisation of fat reserves, with a high risk of hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) and ketosis. Liver damage caused by lipid accumulation as a consequence of lipomobilisation is commonly observed in high producing cows in the early stage of lactation. The main indicators of liver damage and impaired liver function are the enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), cholesterol, albumins and intermediate glucose metabolites - ketone bodies. Propylene glycol and glycerol were used for ketosis prophylaxis in dairy cows in two groups of recently calved cows for 10 days to observe the difference in therapeutic efficacy in counteracting the effects of post partum negative energy balance. The present study shows greater efficacy of glycerol-based product compared to propylene glycol-based product in maintaining blood glucose and the major ketone body, beta-hydroxybutyrate, within physiological limits.
