- Title
Tunisia: New Central Bank Chief.
- Abstract
President Kais Saied has appointed Fethi Zouhair Nouri as the new governor of the central bank of Tunisia. Nouri, a 69-year-old member of the central bank's board, will succeed Marouane Abassi, whose six-year mandate ended on February 17th. Tunisia is currently facing economic hardship due to the Covid-19 pandemic, political tensions, and the war in Ukraine. Nouri's appointment comes after parliament passed a controversial amendment allowing the central bank to finance the public budget with an interest-free loan. The new governor takes over with high inflation, low growth, and high unemployment rates in the country.
