- Abstract
Using the remote sensing image data from 1990 to 2015 on 25 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, this paper analyzes the expansion characteristics of the areas, such as the speed of urban construction land expansion, time expansion, and spatial expansion. These are combined with the exponential of GIS technology and the comprehensive expansion degree. Subsequently, the driving force behind the expansion of construction land is analyzed. The results show that the total amount of urban construction land in the Yangtze River Delta is expanding rapidly, with the annual rate of expansion being 7.05% in the last 25 years , which is higher than the national rate of 5.86%. With regard to time, the urban construction land expansion in the Yangtze River Delta shows a “w-type” situation. With regard to space, construction land expansion differs regionally. Expansion at the center is relatively rapid, while it is relatively slow in marginalized cities due to the limitations from natural factors. Research results on the driving force show that the industrial structure of the advanced indicators, the total population, the per capita disposable income of urban residents, and the investment in fixed assets are positively correlated with the urban construction land area. Per capita gross domestic product, actual foreign direct investment, and total retail sales of social consumer goods are negatively correlated with urban construction land area.
