- Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the occurrence of memory complaints and the risk of depression among the elderly and to assess the relationship between the occurrence of memory complaints and the risk of depression among the elderly. Method: Crosssectional observational study conducted with 150 elderly people linked to the Family Health Strategy. Data were collected using the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) and Geriatric Depression Scale (EDS-15), analyzed by descriptive and bivariate statistics, considering self-assessment of memory as the outcome variable and statistical significance when p-value < 0.05. Results: Most of the elderly presented a low level of self-reported memory complaints, with higher frequency in prospective memory failures. Regarding depression screening, 20.7% had mild or moderate depression. Among the groups studied, it was observed that the elderly with normal psychological condition better self-evaluate memory. Conclusions: There is a state of alertness to public health, especially by confirming the coexistence between two important diseases associated with old age, and primary care should incorporate actions for the early identification of depressive signs and symptoms and memory failures.
