- Title
Brought to Life by the Voice: Playback Singing and Cultural Politics in South India.
- Abstract
While male singers and actors were positively identified with each other, female playback singers' respectability "canceled out, or at least mitigated, the dubious moral status of the actress" (p. 72). The immediate focus of Amanda Weidman's highly engaging study is the history of playback singing - the practice of pre-recording music to which an actor later mimes on set - and playback singers in Tamil cinema over the past 80 years.
