- Abstract
This article discusses the history of violence and Indigenous resistance in New Caledonia, a French territory in the Pacific. The author criticizes French President Emmanuel Macron's treatment of the territory and his efforts to assert French influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The article also highlights the economic importance of New Caledonia as a major producer of nickel. The recent riots and protests in the territory, sparked by proposed electoral reforms, are described, with a focus on the impact on foreign nationals and the desperate conditions faced by some residents. The article concludes by emphasizing the potential consequences of the electoral reforms for the Indigenous Kanak population and their struggle for independence.
