- Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate physical fitness and adiposity indices in military police officers, and to verify whether there is a correlation between these parameters. The physical capabilities of strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory capacity, and flexibility were evaluated, as well as body mass, fat mass, fat percentage, waist-hip ratio, waistheight ratio, waist circumference and conicity index of 226 male police officers. The police officers showed good levels of physical fitness, but above-recommended adiposity levels, both in the whole body, and in the central region of the body (visceral fat). A moderate negative correlation (r=-0.50; p=< 0.01) was observed between fat percentage and muscle strength. The other correlations between physical fitness variables and adiposity indices, although significant, were only classified as weak or negligible correlations (r<0.50). It was concluded that the police officers evaluated had adequate levels of physical fitness, but levels of body fat above the recommended. Additionally, the moderate correlation indicates that police officers with lower fat percentages have greater muscle strength, which may contribute to the work function excellence.
