- Abstract
The case of Philippe Pochon de Rosemain illuminates the informal and often illicit markets in royal contracts, posts, and largesse that flourished at Louis XIV's Versailles. Marginal deal makers like Rosemain played useful roles in what this article calls the economy of deal making. Nonetheless such lowborn operators--especially the women among them--were particularly vulnerable to scrutiny by royal officials. This article throws light on a fascinating but little-understood group of people from modest backgrounds who operated in the interstices of Versailles, furthering our knowledge of the possibilities they exploited and the challenges they faced. It advances our understanding of the interplay of individual favor seeking with the worsening financial troubles of, and intensifying surveillance and discipline within, Louis XIV's regime. It also deepens our appreciation of the intertwined histories of women, society, and the state in France in the decades around 1700.
