- Title
FEANCE, AUSTRIA, AND THE MEXICAN VENTURE, 1861-1864.
- Authors
Barker, Nancy Nichols
- Abstract
The article focuses on the Napoleon III's Mexican expedition and the connection between the venture and Austro-French relations. Napoleon III's Mexican expedition, which placed the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian on an ephemeral throne, have been treated by most historians as an isolated incident apart from European diplomacy. The connection between the venture and Austro-French relations has rarely been mentioned because of the keen desire of both countries, for special reasons of their own. On the other hand, juxtaposition of the negotiations concerning those relations and the correspondence on the Mexican question reveals an important interaction and incidents between them.
