Nasturtium mosaic virus, hitherto considered to be a carlavirus, was shown to be a member of the potyvirus group by its morphology, capsid protein size, positive reaction with potyvirus group antiserum and the presence in its host of cytoplasmic inclusions ("pinwheels"). It is serologically unrelated to five other well characterized polyviruses.
