- Abstract
A literary criticism of two of George Eliot's novels, "Romola" and "Felix Holt," is presented. It compares and contrasts the works that were written in 1862-63 and 1866 respectively. Themes of epicurianism, modernity, and the trope of the self-made man are explored. The settings for the two novels, Florence, Italy and the English Midlands, are considered.
