- Abstract
Central obesity and increased body fats are known to have acute effects on human health leading to a multitude of diseases, of which high blood cholesterol is a major one. Murraya koenigii leaves have widely been documented in the review literature as the ultimate Elixir. However, its role in improvement of anthropometric and body composition variables has been scantly researched. Objective of the study was to investigate the effect of regular supplementation of Murraya leaf powder on anthropometric parameters and body composition variables. A randomized case-control trial was conducted on 160 hypercholesterolemic (TC>200mg/dl) urban women from Alwar city, Rajasthan. The subjects in the two experimental groups received the supplement in two different doses (5 and 10 grams/day) for a period of 60 days. Data was collected on anthropometry and body composition variables at pre and post intervention. The subjects in the experimental groups benefited more from the regular intake of leaf powder than control group subjects. A decrement in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, Total Body Fat percentage and Visceral Fat percentage was observed. The most desirable observation was abatement in visceral fat percentage levels. Murraya leaf powder was shown to be effective in promoting weight loss, abatement of central obesity, scaling down the level of total body fat and visceral fat percentage and, thereby managing risk associated with hypercholesterolemia.
