- Abstract
Logistic masterpiece The redevelopment of the large runway at Cologne/Bonn Airport, was a Herculean task for all involved. In order to master this challenging construction, the project required a new approach, and a new way of thinking in terms of logistics. Cologne/Bonn Airport has a total of three runways, and with approximately 860 000 to of freight passing through it every year, it is the third largest cargo airport in Germany. In addition, 12.9 million passengers pass through it each year, therefore also making it the seventh largest commercial airport in Germany. The refurbishment of the 3 815 m long and 60 m wide runway, has been planned by the airport since 2014. The aim being, to renew the upper asphalt layers after the last major refurbishment in1995, and bring the RWY state‐of‐the‐art technology, in accordance with the European rules on airports, the EASA basic regulation. Only 18 30‐h‐weekends were available for construction work. This equates to a construction time of only 540 h, along with the added challenge of resuming flight operations at 18.00 (6 pm), every Sunday. The cargo planes were already in the air, while construction was in progress.
