- Abstract
The book "I cannibali dei Borbone. Antropofagia e politica nell'Europa moderna" by Luca Addante deals with the events in Naples in 1799. After the collapse of the Neapolitan Republic, parts of the urban lumpenproletariat joined the sanfedisti and committed brutal acts of violence in the summer, in which people were killed and their bodies consumed. The author interprets these events as political humiliation and reversal rituals directed against the republican enemies. These cannibalistic acts were a subversive appropriation of the sovereign rights of the monarch. The book deconstructs the narrative that cannibalism is always attributed to the "other" and shows that political cannibalism occurred not only in southern Italy but also in other urban centers of power in Europe.
