- Abstract
The book "The Splendid Boat: How Germans Stole the Art Treasures of the South Seas" by Götz Aly addresses German colonial rule in Oceania. It draws attention to this previously overlooked part of German colonial history and emphasizes that the public debate in Germany has mainly focused on African colonies. The book sheds light on the violent side of German colonial rule in Oceania and particularly discusses a punitive expedition that led to the plundering of an Oceanic boat, which is now exhibited in the Humboldt Forum. It also addresses the exploitation of the indigenous population and the theft of ethnographic objects. The book is considered an important contribution to the study of German colonialism and expands our understanding of German colonialism in Oceania.
