- Abstract
In accordance with the needs of energy resources in recent years and the restrictions on uranium imports; The need arises to carry out processes of benefits of uranium minerals existing in Argentina. An advantageous technique turns out to be alkaline leaching, then its precipitation. The objective of this work is to carry out an applied research on the optimal conditions that allow the maximum recovery of uranium from liquors obtained from alkaline leaching. To achieve this, an experimental design is developed that establishes the operational conditions for which the maximum precipitation of uranium from alkaline liquors is obtained. Three different precipitation mechanisms are investigated viz. The first uses strong oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide in excess [1, 2]. Where stoichiometrically, 0.9 g of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) was used in acidic conditions, obtaining the precipitation of uranium as UO2*2H2O. A recovery response was achieved for the H2O2 precipitating agent of 87%. In the second mechanism, a precipitating agent such as NaF (sodium fluoride) is added in an alkaline medium [3], without changing the pH of the lixiviated liquors, generating an insoluble compound such as NaUF6. For the operational conditions studied, a recovery response was achieved for the 95% NaF agent. The third mechanism uses NH4OH (ammonium hydroxide) to precipitate uranium [4] such as (NH4)2U2O7, ammonium diuranate or ADU, under slightly alkaline conditions, obtaining the optimal operational conditions, for which a 90% recovery was achieved. If we compare the recoveries of the three precipitating agents studied, the one that gave the best response was the second method, that is, with the use of the precipitating agent of sodium fluoride (NaF). It stands out efficiently with a recovery of uranium of 95%, for the working conditions of concentration of 0,35M NaF and temperature of 25 °C, with stirring times of 30 minutes.
