- Abstract
This article discusses the impact of hypophosphatemia, or low serum phosphate levels, on critically ill trauma patients in the surgical intensive care unit (ICU). The study aimed to determine whether hypophosphatemia is associated with worse outcomes and longer hospitalizations. A retrospective chart review was conducted on adult trauma patients admitted to the ICU, and data was collected on serum phosphate levels, phosphate replacement, hospital days, ICU days, and ventilator days. The analysis found that while hypophosphatemia was not significantly associated with mortality, it was correlated with increased length of stay in the ICU, tracheostomy, acute kidney injury, and pneumonia. The study suggests that aggressive surveillance and phosphate repletion may be beneficial in preventing complications and reducing ICU stays.
