- Abstract
Background of the Study: A large number of populations use medicinal plants for their primary health care. Anogeissus leiocarpa plant was widely used in African traditional medicine and is well known for its antimicrobial activities against many pathogenic microorganisms for treating of many diseases. Objectives: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the phytochemical screening and in vitro antioxidant activities of ethanolic leaf extract of A. leiocarpa. Materials and Methods: The powdered A. leiocarpa leaf was taken to serial exhaustive solvent extraction from a low polar to a high polar solvent to ensure that wide polarity range of compounds was extracted. The in vitro antioxidant activities such as DPPH radical, reducing power, hydroxyl radical scavenging, nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging, and superoxide radical scavenging assay were determined. All the analyses were done in triplicates and average values were taken. Results: The ethanolic leaf extract of A. leiocarpa leaf was showed that high yield value and maximum number of phytoconstituent were screened when compared to the other solvents. The in vitro free radical scavenging assays and half inhibition concentration efficiency of the ethanolic leaf extract of A. leiocarpa were increasing from super oxide, DPPH, and NO to hydroxyl radicals, respectively. Conclusion: The ethanolic leaf extract of A. leiocarpa has significant antioxidant properties and could serve as a good source of natural antioxidant, which may be helpful in preventing the destructive process of various oxidative stressrelated disease.
