- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of music that has been used for centuries to treat psychic and physical disorders, to convey the truths of faith, to inspire devotion, to harmonise emotions, etc. Some theologians claim to hear testimony to the Kingdom of God even if the music is not related to religion, as for instance Mozart's instrumental compositions. In contemporary societies, independently of ideology, more and more music is created whose "spirituality" is characterised by tranquillity, slow tempo, meditativeness and reserved musical language as a response to the need of sacrality. Having reviewed what contemporary composers (Olivier Messiaen, John Tavener, Krzysztof Penderecki, Sofia Gubaidulina) strive for and expect of when writing sacred music the article analyses the music of Lithuanian composers (Viktoras Miniotas' Messa da camera, Feliksas Bajoras' Missa in musica, Onutė Narbutaitė's Chant to All Souls' Day: Lapides, flores, nomina et sidera, Vidmantas Bartulis' "String of Beads for the Virgin Mary" and Te Deum through the aspect of religious testimony. Linking certain musical expressions with liturgical texts, these composers reveal their insights into God, the Kingdom of God, and the possibilities of human relationship with God. In cases where they succeed, listeners can experience religious revelations -- musical hierophany (manifestation of the sacred) through symbolic musical rhetoric -- and enrich their religious experience.
