- Abstract
The article discusses the history of food supply in the the Hudson River Valley of New York and New Jersey in the late 18th and first two thirds of the 19th centuries. The author proposes that the circulation and sharing of food within the community sheds light on the broader social history of the region and of the United States more broadly. Topics addressed include social and anthropological aspects of food, food security and food habits, and the social, economic, and symbolic significance of meals.
