- Abstract
Reviews five books addressing conflicting values in the United States and the Middle East: Tariq Ali's 'The Clash of Fundamentalisms: Crusades, Jihads and Modernity' (2002), Gilbert Achcar's 'The Clash of Barbarisms: September 11 and the Making of the New World Disorder' (2002), Slavoj Zizek's 'Welcome to the Desert of the Real' (2002), John Pilger's 'The New Rulers of the World' (2002), and Alex Callinicos's 'The New Mandarins of American Power' (2003). Ali argues that the most dangerous fundamentalism in the world today is American imperialism. Achcar addresses the conditions in the Middle East that have given rise to militant anti-Western Islamic fundamentalism. Zizek's book interprets the post-11 September 2001 political scene as a symptom of the clash between 19th- and 20th-century values. Pilger's work describes the interplay between racism, imperialism, and resistance in four different countries. Callinicos analyzes the interplay of forces that has produced US policies under President George W. Bush.
