- Abstract
Breastfeeding is no longer just a choice, breast or bottle, but rather a health initiative for infants and children, and the numerous health benefits for both mother and child are well documented. Promotion and support of breastfeeding is integral to assisting families in making the decision to initiate and continue to breastfeed for the recommended one year. It is imperative to present families with information not negatively influenced by the formula industry in pursuance of protecting the practice of breastfeeding. The World Health Organization developed guidelines to minimize the impact of formula industry marketing, which can be an important part of the childbirth educator's role in breastfeeding education presented in prenatal classes.
