Historical consideration of Gluck’s status and works and of 18th century serious opera have been biased by literary prejudices against musical abstraction and by a teleological idea of “progress” in the arts manipulated in turn by nineteenth-century nationalism. The article questions the reasons for this view and invites the reader to re-evaluate 18th century serious opera and Gluck’s contribution mainly in musical terms
