- Abstract
Cuando observamos la diferencia entre dos terapias o la asociación de un factor de riesgo o indicador pronóstico con su desenlace, tenemos que evaluar la certeza del resultado. Esta evaluación se basa en un juicio que utiliza información relacionada con el diseño del estudio y el manejo estadístico de la información. En este articulo se menciona específicamente la pertinencia de la prueba estadística seleccionada. Las pruebas estadísticas se eligen a partir de dos características: el objetivo del estudio y el tipo de variables. El objetivo se puede dividir en tres grupos de pruebas: a) en las que se desea mostrar diferencias entre grupos, o de un mismo grupo antes y después de una maniobra; b) en las que se busca mostrar la relación entre las variables; c) en las que se pretende predecir un desenlace. En cuanto a los tipos de variables tenemos dos: las cuantitativas (continuas y discontinuas) y las cualitativas (ordinales y dicotómicas). Por ejemplo, si se busca demostrar diferencias en edad (variable cuantitativa), entre pacientes con lupus eritematoso sistémico, con y sin afección neurológica (dos grupos), la prueba apropiada es la f de Student para muestras independientes; pero si lo que se compara entre esos mismos grupos es la frecuencia de mujeres (variable binomial), entonces la prueba estadística pertinente es la x².
