The Economy of Literary Interpretation.
- Authors
FISHELOV, DAVID
- Abstract
The article explores economic principles which may be applied in the interpretation of poetic texts. It defines economical literary interpretation as the ratio which may result from analyzing textual details ranging from phonetic to semantic levels and both explicit and implicit assumptions. It acknowledges link between paranoid thinking and uneconomical interpretation. It discusses the principle of ceteris paribus and how this poses possible complications between competing literary interpretations. An example of opposing interpretations for the children's song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" is also presented.
