- Abstract
While sugar production from sugarcane has a very long tradition in China, production using sugar beet only started in the early 20th century. Prior to the communist regime, sugar production was complicated by a number of factors -- whether it was the lack of reforms that would have led to a more rapid expansion and modernisation of the Chinese industry (and thus the Chinese sugar production) or the recurrent conflicts and the instability that went along with them. After the establishment of the communist regime, the conditions of Chinese sugar production changed fundamentally. Leaving aside the moral aspect, in the overall perspective the new strategy led to a new stage of faster development of Chinese sugar industry -- positive qualitative and quantitative changes. By the end of the 1950s, the total area under sugar cane and sugar beet cultivation had essentially equalised. However, the south of China oriented towards the more efficient sugarcane production, remained clearly the main base of the country's sugar industry. In 1958, a radical new economic strategy, the Great Leap Forward, was declared, which, together with other factors, caused major problems for the agrarian sector and also led to a significant decline in sugar production.
