- Abstract
Current research analyzes procedures and techniques employed in the treatment of traumas as described in medical handbooks used in Portugal and Brazil in the 18th century. The manuals deal with therapeutic and surgical matters and consider religious and moral issues as impairments for the development of contemporary medicine. The History of Medicine is investigated through limb amputations and fractures and witnesses that theory and practice interfered in daily life. Methodologically based on the History of the Sciences, we try to understand practices that not only saved lives but also the dissemination of anatomical analysis.
