- Title
Prie Jiesios ir Šventupės - Linksmakalnis.
- Abstract
Linksmakalnis ("Joyful" hill), which stands beside the road Kaunas-Prienai-Alytus, near the precipitous junction of the rivers Jiesia and Šventupis, surrounded by ponds, wasn't always a happy place. The history of the village of Linksmakalnis (Kaunas d.), when one delves deeper, appears to be mysterious, full of secrets, rather horriic and atypical, when compared to other, similar Lithuanian villages. Before the Second World War, surrounding this town were lots of small, cosy manors, but in Soviet times it was turned into a particularly sensitive reconnaissance area, which traced reports from foreign radio stations. The military town was so well isolated, that its residents and their relatives couldn't work or live anywhere else. After the restoration of independent Lithuania and after the Soviet military left, the village buildings were raided by the local Lithuanian people. Based on material colllected by Linksmakalnis ethnographer Aida ŽVIRBLIENE, Regina JASUKAITIENE talks about Linksmakalnis and the surrounding area.
