- Abstract
Senior lecturer at the University of Nizhnij Novgorod, ŠIŽENSKYI reviews neo-pagan movement in contemporary Russia: the main trends, rituals, and characteristics of communities' social life. He also singles out three main myths, consciously or not, followed by contemporary Russian neo-pagans. The first is based on a belief that at pagan times Russia (or the Slaves in general) experienced her "golden age" and that Christianisation brought on a decline. The second myth is the last pagan duke Svyatoslav was a near saint and his son who Christianised Russia was a traitor. The third myth is „theological" and comes from a pseudosource, that is to say a fake source called „The Book Veles" that talks of the pseudo god Yave, Nave and Prave that embodies the main aspects of the being. The article is concluded with an uncertainty as to what shape the Russian neo-pagan movement might take in the future and whether or not it will be acq- knowledged officially, the way it has been in the UK and Iceland.
