The article discusses the history and design of decorated moccasin tongues from the Dakota and Lakota Indian tribes, which used beads, horsehair, and quills for decorative patterns. Images of Sioux, Assiniboin, and Lakota moccasins are presented, and the authors analyze the meanings of the patterns. Native American clothing for men and women, Dakota language terms for moccasin tongues, and the ceremonial significance of the moccasins are discussed.
