- Abstract
The article presents a research which examined the intertwine of masculinity norms with traditional gender roles, marriage and repression of sexual minorities in Australia focusing on convicts as a case of a natural experiment. The study used historical convict sex ratio to measure areas in terms of manifestation of gender roles norms and masculinity. The influence of World War I military service on masculinity norms and impact of gender imbalance on violence, suicide and health outcomes.
