- Abstract
This article reports on the status of my research into organisational communication in Australian primary schools which was conducted over the last two decades. A series of studies has confirmed 10 aspects of organisational communication in primary schools, eight of which relate to school leadership. Current understandings of those aspects are described and their associations with job attitudes or emotional states that may impact teacher performance, specifically job satisfaction, commitment and stress, are summarised. The article progresses the previous research by proposing a model of leadership communication in primary schools. This work has been widely cited in educational research about teacher wellbeing, and has influenced research in related fields of health and human resource management in Australia and internationally. The article concludes with directions for ongoing research, including implications for investigations into secondary schools.
