Selecting cells to make cerebral cortex.

- Abstract
The article examines the mammalian ortholog of a gene in Drosophila that selects cells in the embryonic nervous system and specifies them to generate cerebral cortex. The mammalian LIM homeobox gene Lhx2 is an ortholog of apterous selector gene whose expression in the fly's wing discs corresponds to a dorsal lineage compartment. It is also an upstream of cortically-expressed transcription factors Foxg1 and Pax6. Thus, as a selector gene, it specifies the boundary between the cortex and hem.
