- Title
The Convincing Ground Aboriginal massacre at Portland Bay, Victoria: fact or fiction?
- Authors
Clark, Ian D.
- Abstract
The article offers a response to historian Michael Connor's criticism of the historiography behind an alleged Aboriginal massacre at a site known as the "Convincing Ground," in Portland, Victoria. The author attempts to refute various criticisms made by Connor on topics involving the origins of the name of site of the massacre, paying special attention to a dispute between whalers and Aboriginal Australians involving a beached whale in Portland. Connor's concerns over the estimated death toll of the massacre and its date of occurrence are addressed.
