- Abstract
According to a recent article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the use of e-cigarettes, or "vaping," among adolescents in Canada is a growing concern. The Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey found that 29.4% of students in grades 7-12 reported trying an e-cigarette, with 8.1% vaping nicotine daily. Despite regulations on the minimum age to purchase vaping products and the maximum nicotine concentration allowed, adolescents are still able to access highly concentrated nicotine vaping products. Health care settings should inquire about vaping and provide education on the risks, including nicotine addiction and potential respiratory and neurodevelopmental complications. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) may be an option for adolescents with moderate to severe nicotine use disorder, but further research is needed to evaluate its effectiveness for vaping cessation in this population. Clinicians should work with patients to determine an appropriate dosage of NRT and provide frequent follow-up to assess progress and address any barriers or mental health concerns.
