- Title
Commentary: 'Public Value' and the Measurement of Government Performance: The Shift to Subjective Metrics.
- Authors
Brodsky, Richard L.
- Abstract
The author discusses the broad dissatisfaction with gross domestic product (GDP) to measure government success since it ignores distributional consequences and omits value-based policies without competing argument. Topics discussed include efforts to substitute a Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) where economic indicators will include inequality and the cost of unemployment, environmental indicators and social indicators to include the value of housework, higher education and volunteer work.
