- Abstract
Objective: to characterize the nutritional status of patients with HIV/Aids, at the beginning and end of a twelve-month nutritional follow-up. Method: this is a prospective descriptive cohort study carried out at Day-Hospital Prof. Esterina Corsini, of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul, from January 2006 to July 2007, after the project approval by the Ethics Committee, under the Protocol 654. The inclusion criteria were: > 18 years of age, first nutritional consultation after the medical diagnosis of HIV/Aids, no previous antiretroviral treatment when included in the study. Descriptive statistics was used through the softwares Microsoft Excel and Epi-Info, version 3.4.3, and food intake was analyzed through the software Diet PRO 4.0 Professional. Results: out of the 21 patients, 12 were male and 9 female, 8 had incomplete primary education and 2 were illiterate, and the age groups ranged from 20 to 50 years; 7 were housewives and 6 performed services of conservation and maintenance. In the beginning and after 12 months, respectively, 10 and 12 patients presented CD4+ ≥ 350 cells/mm3. In the end, 11 maintained detectable viral load and 10, undetectable. With regard to food intake, at the end of 12 months, 14 presented a balanced diet in carbohydrates; 17, unbalanced in lipids; and 15, balanced in proteins. Seven patients who did not undergo a previous antiretroviral therapy turned their body weight and diet energy intake into adequate ones. Regarding BMI, initially 3 patients were undernourished and, at the end of the 12-month follow-up, there was no patient with this status. Regarding AMC, initially 9 were undernourished at different levels, and, at the end, 5. Conclusion: one concludes that a dietary counseling at the beginning and during the twelve months may have contributed to improve the nutritional status of these patients.
