- Abstract
Encouraging entrepreneurship has long been the focus of attention for those who create the economic policies of the developed countries of the European Union, and great efforts are being made to develop a dynamic entrepreneurial culture. Entrepreneurship education plays an important role in shaping the mindset of young people and developing the skills, knowledge and competencies needed to create an entrepreneurial culture. Higher educational institutions as a meeting point for knowledge and expertise on the one hand and proactivity, innovation and ideas on the other hand are the main contributors to the development of the entrepreneurship education system. Entrepreneurship education is recognized as a priority of EU strategies and policies, but no Member State meets the criterion of 'full implementation' of mainstreaming entrepreneurship learning, meaning that it is implemented at all levels of education. Numerous studies and numerous authors of books and articles on entrepreneurship agree on one point: entrepreneurship should be introduced in every segment of education, from preschool to higher education, no matter in which field of science it relates to. However, students have the greatest opportunity for education, especially those who study business, in addition to choosing courses related to entrepreneurship, today there are many institutions that help in the education and training of young entrepreneurs, through various business incubators where students can think firsthand and work as entrepreneurs, of course with the help of professional mentors. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which entrepreneurial education in high school and colleges has influenced students' entrepreneurial intentions. Further, to determine whether there is a difference in entrepreneurial intention between male and female students, between undergraduate and graduate students, and students from different study programs. The research was conducted among students from three departments of the University of Dubrovnik: Department of Maritime Studies, Department of Economics and Business Economics and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The sample consists of 110 undergraduate and graduate students. Only 14% of students have participated in entrepreneurship program in school, while 72% of students have entrepreneurship education as a course at the University of Dubrovnik. The results showed that: gender has a significant effect on entrepreneurial intention, entrepreneurial intention is higher in male students than in female students; level of study does not have a significant effect on entrepreneurial intention; students who had the subject of entrepreneurship in secondary school do not have a greater entrepreneurial intention than students who did not have entrepreneurial education in high school. On the other hand, students who have taken entrepreneurship course have significantly greater entrepreneurial intention. The importance of entrepreneurship is still not accompanied by concrete progress in starting entrepreneurial education at all levels of education, which is confirmed by the results of the 2019 GEM survey, where entrepreneurial education in primary and secondary education in Croatia was rated extremely low.
