- Abstract
The non-conformity between longevity and the quality of life of older adults is considered the fifth strategic challenge to the nation. One of the problems of the globalizing world is the ageing of the population. The increasing number of people above the age of 65 and, in particularly of those above the age of 85, puts the economic systems, the health systems and the social activities of the societies to the test. This is the age when people face more and more problems of health and economic character. The retirement from work reduces abruptly and considerably their income and affects negatively their health, psychological and social status. Aging is a natural process in people's lives, however, the age after 60 is connected with significant changes in health. This namely is the boundary of the so-called “third age”. The people belonging to this group have specific health issues as well as social problems, requiring public involvement and, in particular, involvement of the healthcare system. In the last hundred years, there has been a sharp decrease in birth and mortality rates along with a significant increase of life expectancy. Reaching the old age was a dream for man. The pursuit of "eternal youth" is caused by the problems that old age brings. Despite the many opinions that it is also a period of "reflection" on the experience, it is the time of "diseases" and "problems” which should not be neglected. The growing number of older adults and elderly people is challenging the state, public, health, social authorities and organizations to ensure their physical and emotional well-being. Knowing the risk and preventative health factors in this age would facilitate the organization of an efficient healthcare system that will ensure comfortable life during the old age. Materials and methods: This survey includes 110 individuals at the age of 60 and above, living in Stara Zagora and the region. By means of a documentary method, inquiry and mathematical processing, the impact of nutrition and physical exercise on the overall health and well-being of adults and older adults was studied. Conclusion. The profound knowledge for the risk and preventive health factors in the third age guarantees the organization of an efficient healthcare system.
