- Abstract
The article describes the establishment of a kosher kitchen in the Lohr sanatorium and nursing home for Jewish patients. The welfare association successfully negotiated with the management of the institution to set up such a kitchen. The first phase of construction, the kitchen with a caretaker's apartment, was realized. Simon Strauss was hired as the administrator of the ritual kitchen. Sara Strauss volunteered as the head of the kosher kitchen until she passed away on April 17, 1938. Simon Strauss took on the pastoral care of the Jewish patients from the beginning. He was also the chairman of the small Israelite community in the city. The living conditions of the Jewish patients in the institution deteriorated over time, but they had regular contact and conversations with the Strauss couple. The institution was also under the threat of forced sterilization by the Nazi regime. At least 188 people in Lohr became victims of forced interventions, including
