- Authors
CHOI Young-Jin
- Abstract
The article discusses a debate held between Korean Neo-Confucian philosophers during the reign of the Joseon dynasty, termed the Horak debate, which largely dealt with themes of human nature, animal nature, and morality. The role of Korean philosophers Han Won-jin (or Namdang) and Yi Gan (or Oeam) in instigating the debate is explained. The ways in which both philosophers understood the Chinese philosophical notion of "qi" are explored. The author details how the establishment of the Qing dynasty in China largely influenced this schism in Korean philosophical and political thought.
