- Abstract
Microhepathia is a common finding in dogs with a congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (EHPSS). Surgical attenuation results in complete closure of the EHPSS in the majority of cases, while persistent portosystemic shunting remains present in some dogs. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess whether liver size increases on abdominal radiographs six months postoperatively, and whether the increase in liver size is greater in dogs with closed EHPSS compared to dogs with persistent portosystemic shunting. The liver size increased in two thirds of all dogs six months postoperatively compared to the size preoperatively. Nevertheless, this increase in liver size was not statistically significant (p = 0.148). Finally, there was also no significant increase in liver size postoperatively between dogs with closed EHPSS and dogs with persistent portosystemic shunting (p = 0.649). This study reveals that, based on abdominal radiographs, there is no significant increase in liver size, nor can it be assessed if the EHPSS is completely closed or not.
