- Title
The Metaphor of the Wall of Separation: Baptists and the First Amendment.
- Authors
Underwood, William D.
- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the debate surrounding the separation of church and state in the U.S. from the establishment of the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony to the 20th-century, highlighting the role and response of Baptists to its development. The early intellectual advocacy of freedom of religion by Baptists is cited, highlighting the views of Rhode Island founder and Baptist minister Roger Williams. Further discussion is given regarding the influence of Baptist thinkers on the writing of the U.S. Constitution. Arguments are also made against the 21st-century neo-Baptists who would claim that Christianity has a special protected status in the U.S.
