- Abstract
This study of lesbian mothers' coming out to their children examined the modalities of coming out and the themes mothers used to talk about it. We interviewed 12 lesbian couples with children about their coming out to their children. Our analysis showed that the themes and strategies of disclosure used with children differed depending on whether they were born in the context of their mothers' past heterosexual relationships or within the lesbian-headed family. This effect varied with the age of children at the time of their integration into lesbian stepfamilies. Our findings indicate the need to develop specific models of coming out that take into account children's cognitive development.
